The logistics provider has perfected its expertise in the health-pharmaceutical sector in its Strasbourg tri-temperature warehouse, due to open in 2023.

From its base in Strasbourg, the logistics provider has developed expertise in the preparation and management of stocks of medical and pharmaceutical products to such a high level that it is inspiring other establishments in France to follow suit. We take a look at the company's developments less than a week ahead of the Euro Supply Chain trade fair in Mulhouse (Haut-Rhin), where it will be showcasing its range of services.

An international player in its field, the German group Rhenus Logistics has made the Grand Est region the mainstay of its development in France, providing services to the healthcare industry. Our national centre of expertise in healthcare is undoubtedly in this region. It's spreading its expertise to other sites in the country,’ stresses Laurent Brèche, who was appointed Managing Director of Rhenus Logistics France last February (*).

The health-pharmaceutical sector accounts for around 60% of the company's regional business. Rhenus Logistics is also active in capital goods and dry food, for example, and is mainly based in Alsace in the Grand Est region. Around ten warehouses provide a total capacity of 110,000 m2. These warehouses are now almost fully utilised, reflecting the growth of recent years, which has led the logistics provider to work on replenishing them.

The more than 400 regional employees make up a third of Rhenus Logistics' 1,300-strong French workforce, with a 2023 turnover of 300 million euros, from 30 sites with a combined surface area of almost 400,000 m2. ‘We've been able to roll out a range of products in Alsace that covers all temperature ranges for preparation and storage, right down to the very low temperatures of -192°C and -70°C,’ says Laurent Brèche.

The Alsace teams' expertise in health-pharmacy is the result of patient and constant work to acquire it, given the strict process compliance requirements of this business sector, through its Good Practices rules for production and distribution. Their management is entrusted to a pharmacist by profession, Patrice Kaps, who is responsible for providing every guarantee of quality and compliance with standards.

A jewel in the Port of Strasbourg

For Rhenus Logistics, the local relationship with this specific universe began in the early 2010s, in particular with the Millipore (now Merck) plant in Molsheim (Bas-Rhin). This filtration, microbiological control, biotherapy and single-use medical bag manufacturing unit entrusted Rhenus Logistics with the operation of a European Central Distribution Centre, the first to be outsourced by its German parent group. It remains a pillar of the Alsatian portfolio, which it continues to grow through successive expansions.
